Self-Concept Café Lotta
Café Lotta is a political-subcultural space for lectures, group discussions, workshops and many other kinds of events. An info-shop collects critical literature on historical and current political topics and events. For all events happening in Café Lotta, it is important to that no party-political, religious or commercial interests are represented.
Lotta is meant to be a self-determined, autonomous space that attempts to build a counter-world in the midst of a society created by constraints and oppressions. We are part of a historically grown opposition to the existing conditions and want to behave and organize ourselves accordingly. We decide in our plenum according to consensus, thereby no one person should decide over another person. We take care that informal hierarchies are dismantled and that dynamics of dominance are contained as far as possible. In this way we want to remain self-critical and question our theses again and again. We are guided by anti-fascist, feminist, critical of racism and anti-capitalist values.
We know that we live in a world full of oppression. That is why we clearly position ourselves against every form of domination and all related discriminations. Against fascism, with all its forms. From this anti-fascist basic attitude we reject nationalism and patriotism, because these ideologies justify the murderous border regime and the increasing racism and anti-Semitism. We clearly oppose any form of patriarchal oppression, such as sexism, homophobia or trans*phobia, to name just a few forms. Furthermore, we do not tolerate the devaluation of people through classism and social chauvinism. We understand these discriminations as supporting pillars of the capitalist economic system. They contribute to disguise and legitimize the exploitation of groups of people.
*The order of the mentioned discriminations is not meant to be a valuation. Likewise, the enumeration does not represent all existing forms of oppression. Many of these mechanisms are very old, firmly anchored in this society and we have also internalized them. Nevertheless, in order to meet our emancipatory demands, we apply possibilities of action which try to counteract the inequalities.
All persons and groups who contribute to enliven and maintain the space do so free of charge and voluntarily. Be it at the bar, cleaning, organizing lectures and readings or managing the bureaucracy. In order to remain independent and autonomous, we try to make ends meet as far as possible without requesting funding. All the more we depend on donations and the income from the sale of drinks. This helps us to cover our fixed costs, such as rent and operating costs, as well as to maintain the infrastructure and the facility. If anything remains, the Infoladen will be further expanded. The Lotta also supports other political groups and collectives with solo events. Even though a large part of the funding comes from the sale of drinks, the Lotta is not a profit-oriented service business – the bottle of soda should remain affordable. In addition, the Lotta is free from consumerism and is based on solidarity, which is also reflected in the relationship with the consumers. In concrete terms, this means that not everything should be the responsibility of the bar service. The Lotta is always what people bring to the space. Everyone should be able to participate as a matter of course in community tasks such as cleaning, tidying up, washing dishes, and so on. For these communal activities, solidarity and respectful interaction is a prerequisite.
In order for the Lotta to function according to these principles, it needs ongoing support from people who show solidarity. If you want to join in, talk to us or visit our open plenary. We look forward to seeing you!
